Laptops Available for Student Use.

The law library now has 17 laptop computers available for use by Hamline law students. The laptops were purchased to replace the desktop computers that were removed from the library this summer and they are for in-library use only. The laptops are available at the circulation desk on a first come-first serve basis. They may be checked-out for up to four hours with your Hamline ID and by signing a Checkout Agreement. These laptops cannot be used for exams as they are imaged and will lose any files upon reboot. To store or print documents, you must save them to your own storage device. Technical issues related to the laptops, their configuration, etc. should be directed to ITS (x2220).

Reflecting on the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"I'm convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. ... When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incapable of being conquered. A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our present policies. ... True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth with righteous indignation."
-Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in a speech titled
“Why I am Opposed to the War in Vietnam”

Is Postal Reform Bill Signing Statement an Extension of Warrantless Surveillance?

On December 20, 2006, President Bush signed into law the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. In his signing statement, he asserted that the executive branch will interpret a subsection of the law to mean that it will be able to conduct searches of mail "in exigent circumstances". The ACLU is questioning whether this signing statement means that "warrantless surveillance of telephone calls and Internet communications extends to the U.S. Mail." Read the ACLU concern here. The White House, in a press conference, defended the signing statement.
